Job Description

Job Title: Medical Appeal Case Reviewer – Service Entry
Location: Remote *Initial travel to Portsmouth for onboarding and induction*
Start Date: Starting ASAP
Contract: Fixed-term (6–12 months)
Time Commitment: 3 days per week
Rates: Negotiable

 
Overview
We are seeking an experienced medical professional to support the review of appeal cases relating to determinations of fitness for entry into the Royal Navy. The role involves independent assessment of complex or disputed medical decisions concerning civilian candidates applying for service entry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed reviews of medical appeal cases involving determinations of fitness for service entry.
  • Assess complex or disputed clinical information relating to civilian candidates seeking military employment.
  • Participate in formal appeal boards and contribute to evidence-based decision-making.
  • Prepare and review documentation prior to appeal boards, including case files and clinical records.
  • Draft clear written outcomes and correspondence to candidates outlining appeal decisions and supporting rationale.
Working Pattern
3 days per week, typically structured as:
  • Day 1: Pre-board preparation (reviewing case files, conducting pre-reads and preparing for the board).
  • Day 2: Participation in the Appeal Board.
  • Day 3: Post-board actions, including drafting outcome letters and completing associated casework.
Location
  • Remote working is supported, including overseas working where feasible (subject to country restrictions).
  • The successful candidate will be required to travel to SEMC HQ in Portsmouth for initial induction and equipment issue (e.g., laptop).
 Essential Qualifications
  • Preferred: Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (MFOM).
  • Alternative: MRCGP with a Diploma in Occupational Medicine.
Desirable Experience
  • Previous military medical experience or familiarity with Service medical standards (desirable but not essential).
  • Experience in occupational health, medical assessments, or fitness-for-work determinations.
  • Strong clinical judgement and the ability to evaluate complex medical evidence.
