Network Recruitment Wales is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Accountant to join the Financial Services team within the Education and Corporate Services Directorate at Rhondda Cynon Taf. This is a temporary role with agile working arrangements combining home and office-based duties.
About the Role:
As an Assistant Accountant, you’ll support the Finance Manager and Senior Accountant in delivering financial management for specific grant programmes across the Corporate Services and Economy & Environment Directorates. You’ll provide critical financial advice, prepare budget monitoring reports, and support grant claims, ensuring compliance with grant terms and conditions. This role involves close collaboration with service managers, external auditors, and funding bodies, as well as supervising junior team members.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in producing financial reports and budget monitoring information for grant schemes, including reports for Scrutiny Committee and Cabinet.
- Prepare budget estimates, grant claims, and year-end accounts for designated services.
- Monitor expenditure on grant-funded schemes and ensure accurate financial coding.
- Represent the Finance Team in meetings and provide financial advice to service managers.
- Reconcile holding accounts and ensure timely completion of financial returns.
- Supervise and delegate tasks to junior members of the Finance Support team.
What We’re Looking For:
- Qualifications: A relevant Level 4 financial qualification (e.g., AAT Level 4 or equivalent).
- Experience: Proven experience in a financial environment, ideally within local government, with skills in budget monitoring, accounts preparation, and grant management.
- Skills: Strong analytical skills, proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, and excellent communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Desirable: Knowledge of local authority financial regulations, grant accounting, and Welsh language skills.
- Other: A full UK Category B driving licence and access to a vehicle insured for business use may be required for occasional travel.
