Job Description

Maths Academic Coach

Can you help KS4 pupils make sense of Maths when confidence starts to slip? Are you looking for a secondary school role that gives you proper experience before teacher training?

*** Maths Academic Coach
*** September 2026 to July 2027
*** £85 - £105 per day
*** Large secondary, Ward of Edgbaston
*** Tailored academic support to Maths KS4 students

The Role:
Work with the Maths department to support KS4 pupils who need extra help with number, algebra, ratio, problem solving, and exam preparation. You will deliver 1:1 and small-group intervention, reinforce lesson content, support revision, and give teachers clear feedback on progress. Teaching assistants commonly support teachers in the classroom and help pupils with reading, writing, and learning activities.

The Candidate:
You are clear, organised, and able to explain ideas in a way pupils can actually follow, which is rarer than it should be. You want practical secondary school experience, enjoy helping pupils build confidence in Maths, and are keen to develop the classroom skills needed for a future in teaching. Secondary teachers work with students aged 11 to 18, teach lessons, work with small groups, and follow safeguarding procedures, so this kind of support role gives useful exposure to that setting.

Requirements
  • Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
  • Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • Career Goals – A desire to train as a teacher and build a long-term career in education.

The School:
This large secondary school in the Ward of Edgbaston offers the chance to build valuable subject-based experience in a busy Maths department. You will join a setting where targeted intervention matters, classroom support is purposeful, and pupils benefit from extra academic guidance in the run-up to their key assessments. GOV.UK guidance updated on 20 January 2026 says work that falls within the definition of work with children is eligible for an Enhanced DBS check in the child workforce.

How to Apply
Apply today with your CV to be considered for this Maths Academic Coach role. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted to discuss next steps and arrange interview. Early applications are encouraged, as the school may appoint before the closing date.

Due to the high number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
