The Role:
You will support pupils in Year 1 and Year 2 who are working below age-related expectations. Your focus is closing gaps in early reading, writing, and maths through short, structured interventions and purposeful in-class support. You will deliver 1:1 and small group sessions linked to class learning, so pupils practise the same objectives with more repetition and clearer scaffolds. You will model the skill, practise together, then move pupils to an independent attempt with quick checks for understanding. You will keep sessions calm and predictable, so pupils feel safe to try, get it wrong, and improve.
 
In reading, you will build phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension through daily practice and targeted questioning. In writing, you will support sentence building, spelling patterns, punctuation, and editing routines, so pupils become more accurate and confident. In maths, you will reinforce number bonds, place value, and basic calculation through small steps and consistent practice. KS1 learning priorities sit within the national curriculum expectations for reading, writing, and maths, with schools also tracking phonics progress closely in Year 1.
 
You will record brief outcomes after sessions and feed back to the teacher, so groups shift when pupils secure the skill and support stays focused on the next gap.
 
The Candidate:
You bring patience, structure, and clear explanations. You keep pupils on task, build confidence through routines, and respond well to direction so your support stays consistent across the year.
 

• Degree at 2:2 or above in any subject
• Strong literacy and numeracy, confident supporting KS1 reading, writing, and maths
• Comfortable delivering 1:1 and small group sessions with clear outcomes and simple progress checks
• Experience with children through tutoring, mentoring, coaching, youth work, camps, or volunteering is desirable
• Professional approach to safeguarding, confidentiality, and behaviour expectations
• Enhanced DBS required, plus right to work checks, references, and standard school vetting
