Job Description

SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant

Ready to make lessons feel doable for one learner every period?

Be the reliable 1:1 support who turns plans into calm, workable steps.

*** SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** Immediate start, ongoing opportunity
*** £86 - £92 per day
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Wednesbury
*** 1:1 support for a student with special educational needs

The Role:
You will provide consistent, practical support across the timetable so the student can start, stick with and finish tasks. Before each lesson, you will check equipment, preview instructions and agree a simple target for the hour. In class, you will reduce cognitive load by chunking tasks, using visual prompts and modelling a clean first example. You will give quiet cues to sustain focus, plan short regulation breaks and guide a smooth return to learning. You will help organise notes, structure written responses and manage homework deadlines. After lessons, you will record quick outcomes, capture triggers and wins, and share next steps with subject teachers and the SENCO so strategies remain joined up across subjects.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You are steady, observant and clear in how you speak and write. You keep routines tight, notice small gains and fade prompts as independence grows.

  • Degree, 2:2 or above in any subject; Psychology preferred.
  • Communication, concise written notes and clear spoken instructions.
  • Enhanced DBS, already held or willingness to obtain.
  • Strong interest in SEN, regulation strategies and pupil wellbeing.
  • Experience supporting children or young people is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Good’ Wednesbury secondary runs simple, predictable routines that keep lessons purposeful. Departments share sequencing, model responses and common checks, so your support mirrors classroom methods. The inclusion team uses plan–do–review cycles, provides practical tools such as task cards, timers and visual schedules, and offers weekly check-ins so next actions are clear. New colleagues receive a structured induction, short CPD sessions and regular coaching with precise, usable targets.
