Job Description

KS1 Graduate Teaching Assistant

Want focused Year 2 experience before teacher training? Help pupils strengthen reading, writing and number every day.

*** KS1 Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** £85 - £101 per day
*** Immediate start until July 2026
*** ‘Good’ 2-form entry primary school, Hall Green
*** 1:1 and small group support across a Year 2 class

The Role:
You will deliver planned 1:1 and small group sessions that mirror the Year 2 sequence. In literacy, you will secure Phase 5 phonics, common exception words, handwriting fluency and simple sentence structure. You will model short examples, guide practice and use quick checks to confirm accuracy. In maths, you will build number bonds, place value within 100, bridging through ten and written methods for the four operations, using concrete and pictorial models where helpful. You will pre-teach key vocabulary before new units, run brief retrieval routines to keep knowledge fresh and correct misconceptions with clear, step by step explanations. You will keep tight notes after each session, update intervention trackers and agree next steps with the class teacher so support aligns with upcoming lessons and assessments. You will help maintain calm starts, tidy resources and smooth transitions.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You explain ideas in small, clear steps and keep pupils on task. You notice gaps early and build independence without over prompting.

  • Degree, 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication, confident written and spoken English.
  • Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
  • Desire to work in education or with children, commitment to inclusion and progress.
  • Experience working with children, desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Good’ Hall Green primary runs simple, consistent routines from arrival to home time. Reading is protected daily with systematic phonics and guided reading. Maths is mapped in small, connected steps with regular low stakes checks, so methods are consistent between classes. Year teams co plan and share model texts, worked examples and ready to use intervention packs, which keeps preparation efficient and ensures your sessions dovetail with classroom teaching. New colleagues receive a clear induction, weekly bite size CPD and focused coaching drop ins with precise, usable next moves.

How to Apply
Apply through the job advert with your CV. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a brief call and an in school observation. Roles may close early if filled.

Due to the number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
