Job Description

SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant

Want real SEN experience before teacher training?

Help KS1 pupils access learning through calm routines and focused support.

*** SEN Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** January 2026 – July 2026
*** £83 - £98 per day
*** ‘Good’ primary school, Selly Oak
*** 1:1 and small group support across KS1 SEN

The Role:
You will deliver structured 1:1 and small group support so KS1 pupils with additional needs can learn confidently. You will break tasks into clear steps, use visual timetables and now next prompts, and rehearse routines so transitions are smooth. You will run short sessions that build communication, early reading and number skills, then link gains back into class tasks. You will pre-teach key vocabulary, model examples, prepare simple resources pupils can use independently, and fade prompts over time to grow autonomy. You will keep brief session notes, update intervention trackers, and agree next actions with the class teacher and SENCO. You will support regulation during less structured times when directed and follow behaviour and safeguarding procedures at all times.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You are calm, organised and clear in your language. You follow plans closely, notice triggers early and adapt without fuss so pupils re engage quickly and build independence.

  • Degree, 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication, strong written and spoken English.
  • Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
  • Desire to work in education or with children, strong interest in SEN and pupil wellbeing.
  • Experience working with children, relevant experience is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Good’ Selly Oak primary is two form entry with simple, consistent routines from arrival to home time. Inclusion is embedded through plan do review cycles, ready access to visual supports and regulation spaces, and regular check ins with the SENCO. Reading is prioritised with daily phonics and guided reading, while maths is taught in small, connected steps with frequent retrieval so methods stay consistent between classes. Year teams co plan and share model texts, worked examples and ready to use intervention packs, which keeps preparation efficient and ensures your sessions dovetail with classroom teaching. New colleagues receive a structured induction, weekly bite size CPD and short coaching drop ins with precise, usable next moves.

How to Apply
Apply through the job advert with your CV. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a brief call and an in-school observation. Roles may close early if filled.

Due to the number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
