Headteacher – Secondary Special School – Birmingham
Are you an experienced school leader with a passion for transforming the lives of young people with special educational needs? A thriving secondary special school in Birmingham is seeking an inspirational and forward-thinking Headteacher to lead the next stage of its journey, building on a strong foundation of care, achievement, and ambition.
 
As Headteacher, you will be responsible for driving a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement, ensuring that every student, many of whom have complex needs including Autism, SEMH, and communication difficulties, have the opportunity to achieve and thrive. Working alongside a committed leadership team, experienced teachers, and dedicated support staff, you will provide strategic vision, outstanding leadership, and the ability to inspire staff, students, and families alike. An opportunity as exciting as this does not come round often, and the executive leadership team are happy to consider a Headteacher from a mainstream or SEND background, or an experienced Deputy Headteacher looking to take their first step into headship.
 
Job Role:
  • Provide strategic leadership and clear direction across the school.
  • Ensure outstanding teaching, learning, and personal development for all students.
  • Lead, motivate, and develop staff to deliver consistently high standards.
  • Build strong partnerships with parents, carers, external agencies, and the wider community.
  • Oversee the continued development of a broad, balanced, and ambitious curriculum tailored to the needs of secondary-aged students with SEND.
  • Drive school improvement priorities and maintain high standards in line with Ofsted expectations.
  • Lead by example, driving the schools culture.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Significant leadership experience in a special school or mainstream secondary school.
  • A proven track record of raising standards and delivering positive outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to inspire trust and respect.
  • The ability to combine strategic vision with day-to-day operational excellence.
  • A deep commitment to inclusion and improving life chances for young people with additional needs.
  • Strong experience working with students with special educational needs.
Requirements:
  • Qualified Teacher Status is required.
  • NPQH or NPQEL qualifications are desirable.
  • A demonstrable track record of achievement in a leadership capacity.
  • A love for helping students overcome academic and social barriers.
  • Experience managing school or department budgets.
  • History and understanding of strategic planning.
