Head of English – Alternative Provision in Birmingham
Are you an experienced English Teacher looking for the next step in your career? This excellent Alternative Provision in Birmingham is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Head of English to lead its English department. This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of students who have faced barriers to mainstream education.

With excellent leadership, strong pastoral support, and modern facilities, this Alternative Provision provides a structured yet nurturing environment for students. As Head of English, you will be responsible for delivering engaging lessons to small groups, managing a small but committed team of teachers, and ensuring high standards of teaching and learning across the department. Behaviour can be challenging at times, so strong classroom management skills and a patient, resilient approach are essential. This role is ideal for an experienced teacher looking for their first step into leadership, or an current Head of English looking for a rewarding role.
Job Role:
  • Teaching English to small classes of students with SEMH needs.
  • Leading and managing a small team of English teachers to inspire a love for English.
  • Developing and delivering a curriculum that engages and supports students with diverse learning needs.
  • Setting high expectations for behaviour, progress, and achievement.
  • Working closely with leadership and pastoral teams to support students holistically.
  • Monitoring and assessing student progress, ensuring tailored interventions where needed.
Requirements:
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Experience teaching English at secondary level, ideally within an Alternative Provision, PRU, or SEMH setting.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in line management or curriculum development.
  • Excellent behaviour management and the ability to build positive relationships with students.
  • A commitment to improving outcomes for students who require additional support.
