Job Description

Geotechnical / Geo-environmental Engineer
Location: Sheffield
Salary: £27,000 - £36,000

Dig Deep. Build Strong Foundations — for Your Career and the Environment.

My client is looking for a motivated and skilled Geotechnical / Geo-environmental Engineer to join their Sheffield office. This is your opportunity to work on a broad variety of ground engineering and environmental projects that shape communities and safeguard the future.

The Opportunity

As part of their growing geotechnical and geo-environmental team, you’ll be involved in every stage of site investigation and assessment, from fieldwork to final reporting. Your day-to-day role will include:
  • Site Investigations: Conducting and supervising site activities such as trial pitting, soakaway testing, borehole logging, foundation inspections, mine working grouting, and remediation verification.
  • Technical Supervision: Overseeing on-site construction and remediation works, including foundation inspections, mine stabilisation, and contaminated land treatments.
  • Report Writing: Producing comprehensive Phase 1 Desk Studies and Phase 2 Site Investigation Reports, Earthworks Specifications, Coal Mining Risk Assessments, and Verification Reports.
  • Client Liaison: Communicating with clients, contractors, regulators, and internal teams to ensure smooth project delivery.
  • Design Input: Providing geotechnical advice for foundation design, slope stability, ground improvement, and contamination risk assessment.
  • Risk Assessment: Conducting detailed quantitative risk assessments and recommending mitigation strategies.

What You’ll Bring

We’re seeking someone with a solid technical background and a proactive approach to problem solving. Ideally, you’ll have:
  • A degree (BSc/BA) or master’s (MSc/MEng) in Geology, Geography, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience conducting and managing geotechnical and/or geo-environmental site investigations.
  • Strong technical report writing and analytical skills.
  • Confidence working both independently and collaboratively, on-site and in-office.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a car (mileage allowance provided).
You should be working toward professional membership of a relevant body such as The Geological Society or ICE. Fieldwork readiness and a practical understanding of UK ground conditions are essential.

Award Winners
My client is an award-winning, multidisciplinary consultancy based in Sheffield. Their services span civil, structural, geotechnical, and geo-environmental engineering. They deliver technically excellent solutions while building long-term relationships with their clients.

A Place To Grow
Your development is central to their ethos. They provide hands-on mentoring, exposure to varied and interesting projects, and a structured professional development programme. You’ll gain valuable experience across the full project lifecycle and be supported on your path to chartership.

What Is On Offer
  • Competitive salary with twice-yearly reviews and performance-based rewards
  • 4% employer pension contribution
  • Life insurance (2x salary)
  • Enhanced sick pay scheme
  • Generous holiday allowance of up to 26 days + option for 3 extra buy-back days
  • Flexible start/finish times to suit your lifestyle
  • Discounted health cash plan for everyday medical expenses
  • Cycle to Work scheme
