We are seeking an
Operational Technology (OT) Solutions Engineer to design, deliver, and support high-quality OT solutions that meet operational, regulatory, and business needs. Reporting to the OT Engineering Solutions Lead, you will contribute your technical expertise to the development and deployment of integrated OT solutions across Thames Water’s operational estate.
You will work collaboratively with internal teams, external partners, and suppliers to ensure that all solutions align with Thames Water’s technical roadmap, standards, and long-term strategic goals. Your role will help drive continuous improvement, innovation, and future readiness within our operational technology landscape.
What you will be doing as an OT Engineering Solutions EngineerSolution Design & Delivery- Support the design and deployment of OT solutions across Thames Water’s operational assets.
- Ensure solutions meet security, performance, and regulatory requirements.
- Develop detailed technical documentation, including specifications, drawings, and reports, to support solution deployment and ongoing operation.
- Contribute to the testing and validation of OT systems to ensure design integrity and business alignment.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation- Identify and support initiatives that enhance the performance, resilience, and scalability of OT systems.
- Maintain technical knowledge of OT tools, systems, and best practices, applying new insights to improve delivery outcomes.
- Support the adoption of emerging OT technologies and methodologies.
Strategic & Regulatory Alignment- Support AMP8 delivery by ensuring the timely design, approval, and deployment of OT solutions.
- Contribute to AMP9 planning and the OT PR29 submission.
- Ensure all OT activities align with Thames Water’s strategic, technical, and regulatory frameworks.
Technical Governance & Standards- Ensure all work supports Thames Water’s safety, sustainability, and compliance objectives.
- Support periodic inspections and audits to verify quality, compliance, and safety standards.
- Ensure OT systems align with approved architectures, frameworks, and internal technical standards.
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration- Collaborate with engineering, operations, cybersecurity, IT, and asset management teams to deliver integrated OT solutions.
- Build strong working relationships with vendors, regulators, and delivery partners.
- Translate complex technical information into clear, actionable guidance for stakeholders.
Delivery Support & Handover- Provide technical support during build, commissioning, and handover phases to ensure smooth transition to operational teams.
- Contribute to supplier selection, technical assessments, and commercial evaluations of proposed solutions.
Base location – Hybrid – Sewage Treatment Works, ReadingWorking pattern – 36 hours Monday to FridayWhat you should bring to the roleEssential Experience- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in OT solutions or technical governance within utilities or industrial environments.
- Proven experience in deploying OT systems, including SCADA, telemetry, and control systems.
- Strong understanding of OT cybersecurity, risk management, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience working with third-party delivery partners and managing competing priorities.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making ability in complex, reactive environments.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Essential Technical Skills & Qualifications- Higher education qualification or equivalent experience in an engineering discipline.
- In-depth understanding of OT systems and architecture, including SCADA, PLC, HMI, and industrial networking.
- Strong technical report writing, documentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to make balanced decisions considering technical risk and business priorities.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to deliver under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable Experience- Experience developing technical standards, specifications, or frameworks.
- Project management and delivery experience, including planning and performance tracking.
- Ability to simplify and communicate complex technical solutions effectively.
- Experience working with industry or international standards and contributing to documentation.
- Commercial and contract management experience.
- Change management experience within OT programmes.
Desirable Technical Skills & Qualifications- Membership of a professional engineering institution.
- Health, Safety, and Environmental Management qualification (e.g., NEBOSH)
