Job Description

The Senior Project Manager is a key leadership role, within our Thames Water projects. This role will heavily focus on leading a team of project managers as well as directing a project team on some major improvements to our wastewater treatment works. You'll be accountable for a portfolio of projects and personally lead a small number of complexes above-ground/process projects from inception to completion, guiding and developing a multi-disciplined team to ensure successful delivery to time, cost, and quality commitments.

You’ll also play a role in our project management community, establishing best practices and supporting the development of project managers and apprentices, and creating relationships across Thames Water.
What you’ll be doing as a Senior Project Manager
  • Lead a team of project managers to successfully deliver a portfolio of projects.
  • Take accountability throughout the project lifecycles for governance compliance, and internal/external stakeholder engagement, leading to the efficient running of your portfolio, effective project delivery, and the smooth transition of built infrastructure into operational business.
  • Support the definition of solutions to meet the project objectives and oversee the contract award process, from the production of ‘requests for proposals' to the preparation and signing of contract documentation.
  • Prepare, and support the development of, clear project business cases that are affordable and offer value for money.
  • Develop the best project delivery strategy to ensure that key risks and assumptions are managed effectively, and third-party consents are obtained in a timely manner
  • Promote and sustain Thames Water’s Health & Safety vision (zero incidents, zero harm, zero compromises) throughout the lifecycle of the projects
  • Manage and assure the performance of contractors allocated to your projects, to deliver project outcomes to time, cost, and quality
  • Contribute to steering continuous improvement within the Thames Valley Delivery team and delivering against stretching targets
  • Commercially manage all contract matters to achieve the optimal outcome for Thames Water
Location: Hybrid – 2/3 days a week on-site or at a Thames Water office location, with flexibility to travel within London and the Thames Valley.

Working Hours: 36 hours a week, Monday to Friday.


What you should bring to the role

To thrive in this role, the essential criteria you’ll need is:
  • An engineering or other relevant degree and chartered status with either a post-graduate business or project management qualification.
  • Business knowledge with prior involvement in delivering a portfolio of complex projects (up to £100m in value)
  • Knowledgeable in contract management with experience in negotiation.
  • Demonstrate your capability with risk-based and analytical decision-making.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills across multi-disciplined teams, as well as excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Experience in leading the health and safety performance of the team to ensure the 3-zero targets are met.
  • The ability to multitask and manage several multi-million dollar construction projects.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills with an engaging and open approach.
  • Prepared to travel and work across a number of sites.
Nice-to-haves that would make you stand out:
  • Broad utility industry and ideally previous experience in the Water industry.
  • Ideally, experience within a regulated infrastructure environment.
