Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity at Thames Water to join us as an Environmental Incident Specialist!

The purpose of the role is to drive performance and directly impact pollution reduction, one of the top three deliverables for Thames Water. Our environmental performance is monitored and evaluated by our regulators using a range of measures, such as our compliance with our environmental permits and the number and severity of pollution incidents that we cause, which in turn informs our Environmental Performance Assessment (EPA).

As part of the Environmental Incident Investigations team, you will fully comprehensively investigate incidents to a high standard, report information to the Environment Agency about potential pollution incidents and ensure our records align, extract event learning, and feed into continuous improvement workstreams.
  • Base location: Hybrid-Flexible within the Thames Water region (London & Thames Valley)
  • Working pattern: 36 Hours (Mon-Fri)
  • A full UK Driving License is preferred.

What you’ll be doing as an Environmental Incident Specialist
  • Fully investigating pollution incidents, which will require data analysis and interpretation and preparing incident reports within required timescales
  • Preparing written incident reports and providing them to the Environment Agency within required timescales to ensure they are recorded correctly, and writing challenge documents where anomalies are identified
  • Conducting and assuring detailed root cause analysis to understand what has gone wrong and what actions and learning need to be implemented to prevent a repeat incident
  • Working closely with field teams and other business areas to ensure that environmental performance is prioritised, and providing feedback (e.g. through training/presentations) where improvements can be made.
  • Acting as the technical specialist, you will be responsible for developing and recording team processes and carrying out independent research projects on environmental subjects.
  • Coaching and supporting others in your area of expertise, and offering day-to-day support for team queries and reviews, acting as a subject matter expert
  • Collaborating within the team and wider business, and feeding into discussions around pollution reduction initiatives
  • Reporting on team and business performance, maintaining key performance indicators and investigating where these deviate from the expected targets

What should you bring to the role?
  • A degree or higher-level qualification in an environmental or science discipline (or equivalent) is essential.
  • Has previous experience working in a similar role or industry.
  • Understanding of waste network and waste treatment operation is highly desirable.
  • Ability to deliver exceptional service through an enthusiastic, positive and proactive approach, taking initiative and accountability for your role while working accurately within a busy team.
  • Excellent planning, organisation, and verbal/written communication skills, including report writing.
  • Evidence of working flexibly across organisations, building and/or improving ways of working and embedding them into organisations.
  • Understanding Environmental Legislation and/or Regulations, including CICS & 16_02, is desirable.
  • Excellent IT literacy, including good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

We would appreciate it if you could attach a cover letter alongside your CV so we can get to know you better and understand your motivation for applying.

What’s in it for you?
  • Offering a salary from £46,500 per annum, depending on skills and experience.
  • Annual Leave: 26 days holiday per year, increasing to 30 with the length of service. (plus bank holidays)
  • Pension: Maximum of 12% = 2x employee contribution.
  • Performance Related Pay Plan (PRPP): Max (of salary) = 10%. On Target (of salary) = 5%.
  • Generous Pension Scheme through AON.
  • Access to lots of benefits to help you take care of you and your family’s health and wellbeing, and your finances – from annual health MOTs and access to physiotherapy and counselling, to Cycle to Work schemes, shopping vouchers and life assurance.
