Job Description

 About the role:
The Technical Co-ordinator is an exciting, hybrid role with a mix of field, office-based and home roles within Waste Networks.

As the Technical Coordinator for the SSPS Team (Small Sewage Pumping Team), you will be responsible for managing the prerequisites (materials, permits, resources, and services) for all complex jobs, including planned and reactive work, across maintenance and operations. This role will involve day-to-day contractor liaison and management, input into future planning and solutions, and providing technical support to the wider team.

This role is vital to the effective performance of our Critical National Infrastructure. You will undertake important work to repair and enhance assets on our Sewage Pumping Stations, ensuring our customers receive reliable and high-quality service. This varies from relatively simple jobs, such as replacing ‘like-for-like’ valves, pumps, and control systems, to complex work where stations need to be upgraded or flow management needs to be implemented to enable the job. A significant amount of the work undertaken will directly link to customer contacts, giving you the opportunity to make a big impact on the lives of the people we serve. You will join a team containing both recent starters with fresh ideas and individuals who have been maintaining our assets for many years and are more than willing to share their experience.

Main Accountabilities
  • Immersing yourself in often unseen and unique infrastructure that serves millions of people
  • Investigating and reviewing the performance of our Sewage Pumping Stations
  • Responding to asset failures and coordinating resources to return them to service
  • Liaising with our contractors and suppliers to deliver solutions to problems on our sites
  • Managing complex work and investigations
  • Using your experience and technical expertise to improve the lives of our customers
  • Understanding and engaging with a variety of equipment, including but not limited to pumps, valves, pipework, lifting equipment, ultrasonic level sensors, flowmeters, control panels and LV electrical equipment.
  • Providing technical advice and expertise to field staff and 3rd parties. This will include providing detailed instruction and monitoring progress.
As the successful candidate, you will work in an area alongside a Field Operations Manager as well as a team of technicians with a wide variety of skillsets ranging from unskilled through to mechanical, electrical and ICA. You will work with support teams to deliver projects and maintain equipment.
  • Waste Control Centre – Monitor our telemetry
  • Planning and Scheduling – Plan and deliver work to technicians
  • Maintenance Projects – Deliver higher value capital works
  • SCADA Support – Technical expertise for our telemetry systems
  • Purchasing and Contract Management – Supplier management
  • Liaising with customers and customer representatives including council and local government officials.
  • Responding promptly and effectively to operational events
 System and Process
  • Raising and receipting work orders through SAP
  • Using our APS risk system to highlight and investigate areas of risk and opportunity within our infrastructure
  • Use of SCADA telemetry to investigate site operation and ensure a prompt and effective response in event situations
  • Reviewing reports for statutory inspections and raising relevant follow-on work (i.e. chemical tank inspections and remedial actions).
To be successful in this role, it is envisaged that you will have the following skills and experience:
  • Qualified to at least NVQ level, ideally specialised in mechanical or electrical engineering. Ideally, you will have experience with technical job design and/or prerequisite management within an infrastructure-related environment.
  • You will have extensive experience in a process-related or utility industry together with a sound working knowledge of the safe systems of work required under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • IT literacy is essential as all work is managed through the SAP system (user training for this and other standard software systems will be provided).
  • You will also demonstrate a good business/ stakeholder awareness, together with an innovative and creative approach to problem-solving and strong team-working and influencing skills.
  • A full current driving license is essential for this position
What’s in it for you?
  • Competitive Salary offering up to £48,000 per annum, depending on your level of skills and experience.
  • 26 days holiday per year increasing to 30 with the length of service. (Plus bank holidays)
  • Access to lots of benefits to help you take care of your and your family’s health and well-being and your finances – from annual health MOTs and access to physiotherapy and counselling to Cycle to Work schemes, shopping vouchers and life assurance.
