Transport Officer - Assessment & Passenger Assistants (PA's)
Location: Plymouth, Ballard house PL1 however possibility of hybrid working
Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday-Friday, 08:30am - 16:30pm)
Contract: Temporary (August - November 2025)
Pay Rate: £15.08 per hour

We're seeking a highly organised and motivated Transport Officer to join Plymouth City Council's Home to School Transport Team. This is a key role within a fast-paced service that supports over 1,000 children in accessing education daily via taxis, minibuses, and public transport.
About the Role
This temporary position will cover the responsibilities of two Transport Officers, focusing on transport assessments and coordination of Passenger Assistants (PAs). You'll play a vital role in ensuring children receive the transport support they're entitled to, especially those in foster care or with additional needs.
Your responsibilities will include:
-Assessing Transport Entitlement:
Evaluate applications for school and social care transport in line with evolving statutory and local policies, ensuring fair and timely decisions.
- Coordinating Social Care Transport:
Liaise with social workers and our procurement officer to arrange urgent transport for children in foster placements, enabling uninterrupted access to education.
- Appeals Support:
Assist in preparing Stage One and Stage Two appeal documentation, helping families understand and navigate the appeals process.
- Customer Service & Communication:
Respond to phone calls and enquiries from parents, schools, transport operators, and Passenger Assistants, providing clear and empathetic support.
- Administrative Duties:
Maintain accurate records, process applications, and support the wider team with day-to-day operational tasks.
We're looking for someone who thrives in a busy environment and can juggle multiple priorities with confidence and care. You'll need:
- Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal
- Strong IT proficiency - comfortable using databases, spreadsheets, and email systems
- A high level of organisation and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
- Experience in transport coordination, education, social care, or public services is highly desirable
