The Role
Red Personnel are delighted to be recruiting on behalf of our public sector client for an experienced Fire Safety Surveyor. This is a pivotal role within the Property & Compliance Team, focusing on ensuring the borough’s housing stock is effectively inspected, managed, and maintained in line with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and wider Health & Safety legislation.
This position requires a confident and technically skilled professional who can combine hands-on fire risk assessment work with providing specialist advice, quality assurance, and stakeholder engagement across housing services.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake and produce Fire Risk Assessments (FRAs) across housing stock and community/tenant meeting rooms.
- Identify fire-related risks, raise orders with contractors, and ensure remedial works are implemented effectively.
- Prepare and manage programmes of FRA inspections, including periodic desktop reviews to ensure compliance.
- Carry out quality assurance checks on FRAs completed by external specialist contractors.
- Monitor contractor performance, including inspections of completed works and follow-ups on non-compliance.
- Develop specifications for fire safety works and projects, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and best practice.
- Inspect communal areas and signage, ensuring they remain safe and free from obstructions.
- Work collaboratively with the London Fire Brigade, particularly in relation to audits, enforcement notices, and joint inspections.
- Support policy, procedure, and strategy development within fire safety and contribute to wider organisational planning.
- Provide training, advice, and guidance to colleagues, housing management partners, contractors, and residents on fire safety matters.
- Deliver presentations to tenants and leaseholders, providing clear and accessible advice around compliance and safety.
- Support vulnerable residents in understanding and implementing fire safety measures.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Fire Safety Surveyor or equivalent within housing/local authority or property services environments.
- In-depth knowledge of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Building Regulations, and Health & Safety legislation.
- Strong technical expertise in Fire Risk Assessments, inspection processes, and remedial actions.
- Experience of contractor management and quality assurance.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders including residents, contractors, and external regulatory bodies.
- Ability to produce detailed technical reports and act as an expert witness if required.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and staying up to date with legislation and best practice.
Additional Information
- This role sits within PO6 grade equivalency.
- Assignment is full-time, mostly site-based across the West London Borough’s housing stock, with flexibility for office or remote working on agreed days.
- Candidates must be prepared to contribute to council emergency response duties if required and maintain up-to-date IT and information management compliance.
- A strong understanding of safeguarding, equal opportunities, and health & safety practices is essential.
