Job Description

English Academic Coach

Want paid classroom experience before teacher training?

Help KS3 and KS4 pupils strengthen reading, writing and analysis.

*** English Academic Coach
*** January 2026 – July 2026
*** £82 - £101 per day
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Ward of Edgbaston
*** 1:1 and small group academic support across the KS3 and KS4 curriculum

The Role:
You will deliver targeted 1:1 and small group support that ties directly to department schemes. You will pre-teach key vocabulary, model close reading, and guide pupils through structure and planning for responses. You will build accuracy in grammar and punctuation, improve paragraphing and cohesion, and develop comparative and analytical writing. You will use quick diagnostics to spot gaps in inference, writer’s methods and context, then address them with clear examples and guided practice. You will prepare lean resources that mirror classroom methods, track short outcomes after each session, and share next steps with class teachers so intervention feeds straight back into lessons and upcoming assessments. You will help maintain calm starts, tidy transitions and consistent expectations.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You communicate clearly, organise sessions well and give precise feedback. You act on guidance quickly and help pupils move towards independence.

  • Degree, 2:2 or above in English Language, English Literature or a closely related subject.
  • Communication, strong written and spoken English.
  • Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
  • Desire to work in education or with young people, interest in English pedagogy and progress.
  • Experience with pupils, such as tutoring or mentoring, is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Good’ Edgbaston secondary keeps lessons purposeful through simple, consistent routines. English is well sequenced with shared models, exemplar responses and common success criteria, so your sessions align with classroom teaching. Reading is supported with guided practice and vocabulary teaching. Assessment uses low stakes checks and past paper items to identify gaps early. The team co-plans and provides high quality materials, which makes preparation efficient and impact visible. New colleagues receive a structured induction, weekly CPD and short coaching drop-ins with clear, usable targets.

How to Apply
Apply through the job advert with your CV. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a brief call and an in-school observation. Roles may close early if filled.

Due to the number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
